How to think about size when choosing a base vehicle?

In this picture you see our F250 crew cab short bed truck next to our German friends’ MAN expedition truck. At 5t and 2m width the F250 isn’t exactly a small vehicle and yet, it is dwarfed by the 12t and 2.5m wide MAN equipped for extended period expedition travel around the globe.

The larger size allows to bring along more comfort and extra gear, but it will also limit the the number of narrow mountain roads and small villages you can visit along the way, not to mention the many small bridges that will not carry the 12t weight.

Below you will find the four categories of base vehicles that people use for their overland camper builds.
